GM halts production of Silverado, Sierra pickups at Mexico plant

Shutdown at Silao facility affects Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra output, highlighting vulnerabilities in global supply chains.

General Motors (GM) will halt production for several weeks at its Silao, Mexico, plant, which builds the high-volume Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups. The facility initially was shut down during the first two weeks of July and will idle again in early August, which may affect the production of GM’s top-selling and most profitable vehicles.

While GM characterizes these pauses as part of normal operations, the extended downtime is notable given the plant’s critical role. The interruptions come as global trade tensions, including tariffs and supply chain disruptions, continue to pressure North American automotive production.

Here’s why it matters:

Pickup trucks like the Silverado and Sierra are cornerstone products for GM dealers, generating strong customer demand and high-margin sales. Any slowdown in production can result in tighter inventory, longer delivery timelines, and fewer dealership incentives.

For franchise owners, delays in receiving high-demand trucks can negatively impact monthly sales performance, revenue projections, and customer satisfaction, especially during peak sales months. Additionally, broader supply chain uncertainty related to trade policies may further complicate product planning and stocking strategies.

Key takeaways:

  • GM pauses production at key truck plant
The Silao, Mexico, facility, which builds the Silverado and Sierra, is idled for multiple weeks in July and August, affecting flagship pickup output.
  • Top-selling models impacted
Silverado sales rose 2% to 278,599 units in the first half of 2025, while Sierra sales jumped 12% to 166,409 units, making them GM’s most important U.S. models.
  • Downtime is uncommon for truck plants
Extended stoppages at full-size truck factories are rare, given their profitability; these plants often run three shifts to meet demand.
  • Supply chains under pressure
Trump’s tariffs and China’s export restrictions on key parts, such as rare-earth metals, are disrupting auto manufacturing across North America.
  • Dealers may face tighter inventory
Due to production delays at a major plant, dealers may experience reduced truck allocations, which could impact sales targets and customer delivery timelines.

As geopolitical tensions and production adjustments continue to shape the automotive landscape, dealers should prepare for potential supply constraints and align with OEMs on updated delivery schedules. Monitoring factory operations and trade developments will be essential for staying ahead of inventory gaps and maximizing showroom performance.
